The next season was more successful for Phillips at Boro. In the 1990/1991 season, Phillips made 44 appearances as Middlesbrough finished 7th and reached the Play-Off semi-finals, before losing to eventual Play-Off winners Notts County. Over the Summer of 1991, Colin Todd quit, and his replacement was future Wanderers assistant Lennie Lawrence. The 1991/1992 season was a complete success for Philips.
